A Study on Marine Protected Areas is Presented to the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the United Nations

On 4 December 2019, at a meeting of the Group of Friends of Oceans and Seas*, Dr. Ellen Pikitch, Professor at the University of Stony Brook, New York, and Chief Scientific Officer of the Ocean Sanctuary Alliance, presented a study entitled "Gaps in Protection of Important Ocean Areas**" to the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the UN in New York.

This presentation shows that many maritime regions that are identified as being in need of protection are not designated as Marine Protected Areas, particularly in exclusive economic zones.***   A particularly interesting aspect of this study is the analysis of data compiled on the World Database on Protected Areas, which is managed by the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

As a reminder, Sustainable Development Goal 14 has not yet been achieved.  To support the implementation of SDG14, a Conference to be held in Lisbon next June should make it possible to strengthen actions to help protect the oceans.

*:The Group was founded in 2015 and is comprised of Ambassadors to the UN who are committed to preserving the oceans.
